Analysing Opening Sequences - 'Skyfall'
The third opening sequence I am going to be looking at is from 'Skyfall' which is part of the action genre/spy genre.
This opening sequence contains the following conventions:
- Production company logos (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Columbia Pictures)
- Titles (the production company, the film name, the names of actors/crew and the director, all at the end of the opening scene)
- Indication of genre (iconopgrahy is used in this opening scene to emphasise that the film belongs to the action/spy genre. The props which include guns, motorbikes and earpieces, and the bustling setting are good examples of this)
- Introduction to character and his traits (the audience are introduced immediately to the protagonist and we watch him go on an epic chase through the city to catch the enemy, showing bravery, fearlessness, skills in fighting, determination)
- Enigma is created (the audience are thrown into a chase right from the beginning which creates confusion and mystery as they want to understand why this is happening)
