Analysing Opening Sequences - 'Shaun of the Dead'

The fifth opening sequence I am going to be looking at is from 'Shaun of the Dead' which is a horror/romantic comedy hybrid.

This opening sequence contains the following conventions:

• Production company logo (Working Title)
• Titles of production companies (Universal Pictures, Studio Canal, Working Title)
• Indication of genre(s) (the genre is presented through the conflict that the protagonist has at the beginning of the scene as Shaun and his girlfriend are having relationship problems and having arguments about whether they should spend more time without Shaun’s friend with them)
• Introduction to setting (typical London neighbourhood as they are sat in Shaun’s local pub which he visits frequently and Shaun’s house is very messy as he lives with his friend instead of his girlfriend)
• Introduction to protagonist (we learn that Shaun is lazy, unfocused and his routine seems to be repetitive, therefore the audience are eager to find out whether his relationship lasts with his girlfriend)
• Enigma is created (the unsettling music creates expectations that something will happen and that Shaun’s repetitive boring life will change, this is reinforced by everyone’s actions whilst the music is playing as everyone is doing the same thing at the same time as if its a routine therefore the audience feel unsettled)
