Looking at the BBFC and Choosing a Certificate for 'When Duty Calls'
I need to decide on a certificate/rating for my film 'When Duty Calls', so I have looked at the website for the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) which determines an appropriate age rating for films and explains why they receive specific certificates. The website is useful as it provides clear explanations for the broad ratings it gives films, whilst outlining the content that influenced the decision. Therefore, this allows viewers to determine whether a film is suitable for them before they watch it.
The BBFC splits films into 6 different age categories which are:
- U - suitable for all
- PG - parental guidance
- 12A - suitable for 12 years and over or accompanied by a parent if younger than 12
- 12 - No one younger than 12 can buy or rent a 12 rated film (home viewing)
- 15 - suitable only for 15 years and older
- 18 - suitable only for adults
The BBFC determine the age rating recommendation through their guidelines which include factors such as bad language, dangerous behaviour, discrimination, drugs, horror, nudity, sex, violence and sexual violence.
